The 18-year old singer was named artist of the year for 2008 by Billboard.

“It’s bigger than what I can ever imagine. It’s unexpected totally, so it’s a surprise,” Brown said in an interview Thursday.

Chris Brown had a really successful 2008 with hits like ‘Forever’ and ‘With You’ as well as a collaboration with American Idol winner Jordin Sparks for ‘No Air’.

Lil Wayne came in second and Rihanna for third.  Both had some serious hits for 2008 as well. Honorable mentions for Alicia Keys and Taylor Swift to round up the top 5 artists.

The rankings are based on album sales, digital downloads, radio airplay and internet streaming.
